Monocle
Something To Say
RCP 007 | 11.08.2007
- “Something To Say”
- “This Side Up”
Beginning like whispers on a bed of moonlight, Monocle’s “Something to Say,” a wordless, breathless anthem that instantly asphyxiates the senses, is a silent tribute to organic sound. Lush melodies balanced atop what seem like the lost gurgles of drowning victims lull the listeners through the track and deposit them softly in dissonant pools of twanging strings, only to be carried off by the soft thunder of the incessant beat. A song without vocals has never said so much.
Often enigmatic and consistently visionary, “This End Up” professes the dynamic and dexterous range of Monocle’s sound. While perilously laden in soft syncopated rhythms, the track is also a wealth of seemingly organic sounds that alight chaotically upon each other without a melody to act as disciplinarian. A song can often lose its place without a dutiful melody to follow; however, “This End Up” is a testament to Monocle’s sonic ingenuity, and can serve as its own guide.
